24-26 June: The 14th WRF Users' Workshop
27 June (Friday morning): Instructional Sessions (WRF- Hydro, MPAS, LAPS, IDV, NCL, VAPOR)
The primary objectives for the Users' Workshop are to present WRF modeling system updates, to discuss model development and issues, and to consider evaluations and applications of the model. Papers focusing on development and testing of model applications (in all areas), and those on the application of the WRF model at sub-1km grid sizes, are especially encouraged. Authors are given the option of requesting either a poster or an oral presentation; however, we would like to strongly encourage authors to consider submissions for a poster presentation, due to time constraints for oral sessions.

Best practices for Applying WRF, WRF-DA and WRF-Chem (1:30pm - 5:00pm)
Short tutorial sessions will be offered for:
Model for Prediction Across Scales (8:30 am - 10:30 am)
MPAS is a newly developed nonhydrostatic global model using a Voronoi (hexagonal) mesh that does not have the problems associated with the latitude-longitude global WRF model. Developed jointly by NCAR/MMM and DOE/Los Alamos National Laboratory, MPAS-Atmosphere uses an integration scheme very similar to WRF and it uses a subset of the WRF physics. MPAS can also use variable meshes that transition smoothly from coarse to fine resolution, alleviating problems with abrupt grid refinement in WRF. This session will provide an overview of MPAS-Atmosphere, including instruction on how to download, install and run the system.
NCL (8:30 am - 10:00 am)
The NCAR Command Language (NCL) is a scripting language designed specifically for the analysis and visualization of geoscientific data. Some of the data formats it supports include NetCDF, GRIB1, GRIB2, shapefile, HDF4, HDF-EOS2, and HDF-EOS5. Its visualizations are world-class and highly customizable. This session will give participants an overview of the capabilities of NCL including new features, and will focus mostly on how to display WRF model data.
VAPOR (8:30 am - 10:00 am)
This tutorial is a hands-on course, presenting a variety of techniques for understanding WRF output through the use of 3D visualization. The goal is to enable attendees to easily use 3D graphics and animation in the analysis of WRF output. Attendees are not expected to be familiar with 3D graphics. The visualization will be performed using VAPOR (http://www.vapor.edu), an interactive visualization tool that has been developed at NCAR for the understanding of turbulence data. This course will be held at the NCAR CTTC computer classroom in building CG2, a short walk from the WRF workshop in building CG1. Attendance is limited to 32, with one or two attendees per computer.
WRF-Hydro (11:00 am - 12:00 pm)
In this session, a description of the WRF-Hydro hydrological modeling extension packages will be described, and version 2 updates will be discussed. During the tutorial we will offer live demonstrations on the following activities:
1) Navigating the website and downloading code, documentation and test cases.
2) Compiling code on the NCAR yellowstone supercomputer
3) Constructing new WRF-Hydro domains
4) Executing the model
5) Basic visualization using Unidata's IDV software
Multi-scale Data Assimilation with the Local Analysis and Prediction System(LAPS) (10:30am-12:00pm)
In this session, the following topics will be covered:
1) Principles, methods, and benefits of multi-scale data assimilation for convective-scale applications for situational awareness and the initialization of very fine scale WRF forecasts
2) Examples of real-time applications
3) How to download, build, and run LAPS
4) Community development of LAPS
IDV (10:30 am - 12:30 pm)
Unidata's Integrated Data Viewer (IDV) is a freely available, multiplatform visualization and analysis tool for interdisciplinary geoscience data. The IDV brings together the ability to display and work with a wide range of data including satellite imagery, gridded data, observations and radar data, all within a unified interface.
Participants are reuired to furnish their own laptop computers and to be adept at installing and configuring new software on their machines. The IDV are Java-based applications that require Java 1.6. The user’s machine must provide full OpenGL video support and be configured with at least 1 GB of RAM (2 GB or more is strongly recommended).
During the workshop, the WRF helpdesk will be open for several sessions for users to discuss their special issues with developers.

We would like to encourage all poster presenters to provide us with an electronic version of their posters (or a short ppt file describing the poster), so this can be posted on the web before the workshop.
