This talk provides an overview of the 2nd generation of Intel Xeon Scalable Processor and performance evaluation of key numerical weather prediction (NWP) and climate workloads on Cascade Lake AP CPU. To demonstrate the advantages of Cascade Lake AP architecture for weather/climate HPC segment we conducted performance studies for 4 community weather/climate models: Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF), Model for Prediction Across Scales (MPAS), Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean (NEMO) and Community Earth System Model and we compared performance of Cascade Lake AP with previous generations of Intel Xeon and with alternative architectures such as AMD EPYC and NVidia Tesla GPU. Results of this comparison showed strong advantages of Cascade Lake AP over other architectures. In addition to single node study, we evaluated performance of selected workloads at scale and cluster results showed excellent multi-node scaling of new generation of Intel Xeon CPU.
