Appendix 1.
The sounding to be used to initiate the simulation
is given below. It provides height, pressure, temperature, relative
humidity, and horizontal wind components at 47 levels, from 130
m to 30 km. Note that the first level of the sounding (i.e., zinkm(1),
press(1), etc) provides the data at the surface. This means, in
particular, that the model levels should represent height above
the zinkm(1).

Appendix 2. Evolution of surface heat fluxes.
The code below (provided by Steve Lang from NASA
Goddard) gives a simple fit to the surface latent and sensible
heat fluxes for the February 23rd case. Note that you can either
assume some method to distribute this flux over the lowest few
model levels, or rely on the subgrid-scale model to do this.

Appendix 3. Evolution of the radiative cooling.
The data below represent the time evolution of the
radiative cooling profile every 10 min for 6 hrs (i.e., 36 time
levels). The data is
provided at 33 height levels, from 42.50m to 22699.48m above the
ground. The original source of these data is the NASA Goddard
simulation of the February 23rd case, but it has been considerably
smoothed in the vertical and cooling rates above 18 km have been
set to zero. These data should be extracted from the text and
saved into a separate file. They should be read during the initialization
phase of the model simulation and interpolated into the model
vertical grid. Moreover, time interpolation is required at every
model time step to obtain radiative cooling at a given model simulation
time. Please assume that the cooling rate provided at the first
level (i.e., at 42.5 m) can be used as the rate below this level
(i.e., between the ground and 42.5 m). Also, if required by your
model setup, the radiative heating above the last level provided
(i.e., above 22.7 km) should be set to zero. Finally, please use
the cooling rates at 10 min between model start and t=10 min.
