WORKING GROUP 8: Web Site, Workshops, Model Support

Table of Contents

Representatives:

  • Jimy Dudhia (lead), NCAR
  • Bill Moninger, FSL
  • Matt Pyle, NCEP
  • Fred Carr, CAPS
  • Scott Applequist, AFWA
  • Kevin LaCroix, AFWA

Mission:

The role of this Working Group is to develop and maintain general access and limited access Web pages for WRF, to help in planning workshops and tutorials, and in making documentation available, and to plan for community support of WRF codes as they become available.

Status:

The set of WRF Web pages reflects some of this Working Group's responsibility. WRF codes are now available, so user support (wrfhelp@wrf-model.org or wrfhelp@ucar.edu) is now accepting messages.

WRF 1.0 was released to the user community on Novemeber 30 2000, and the latest version (1.2.1) was released in May 2002. The Users link on the WRF Home Page is now active where users will be able to download code after registering their e-mail address which will also enable them to join the wrf-news mailing list, and download documentation. There will be updates for bug-fixes regularly.

In addition to the user support e-mail address, we have set up Web information on accessing and running the various codes (model, initialization, post-processing, and visualization packages) and we have made available documentation and test datasets. The wrf-news mailing list allows users to receive WRF news and updates. Mail will only be sent by the WRF User Support personnel to this list. There is a separately subscribable general user Forum (linked from WRF Home Page) for questions and comments to all other subscribers and discussions among users and developers.

Plans:

We are continuing to organize the Web pages. This WG is going to be responsible for the content of the general access pages, but at the level of the individual Working Groups, separate Webmasters are being designated to maintain Working Group and limited access pages at their own sites.

Forums are planned for each working group as a replacement for the WG mailing lists. This has a potential benefit of sorting discussions by threads and archiving discussions. The implementation is still being worked out.

User support duties for WRF will include organizing workshops on a regular basis in Boulder in the summer each year. We have held workshops in conjunction with tutorials at NCAR in August 2001 and June 2002. The next one is tentatively in June 2003. Planning meetings for WRF will be organized about twice per year, including one in the summer at the time of the annual workshop.

The coming WRF workshops are announced elsewhere on these pages.

Interaction with other WRF Groups:

  • Numerics and Dynamics WG: User support for numerics/dynamics questions
  • Software Architecture and Standards WG: Code/documentation distribution and maintenance
  • Standard Initialization WG: Code/documentation distribution and maintenance
  • 3DVAR WG: User support for 3DVAR questions and code/documentation distribution and maintenance
  • 4DVAR WG: Code/documentation distribution and maintenance
  • Post-processing WG: Code/documentation distribution and maintenance
  • Model Testing and Validation WG: Test dataset distribution
  • Model Physics WG: User support for physics questions
