8.5    Achievements and Challenges in Developing and Maintaining COSMO-CLM as a Community RCM

Will, Andreas, Brandenburg University of Technology, Cottbus, Germany

The COSMO model is the unified non-hydrostatic limited area model for operational weather forecast (COSMO), environmental (ART) and regional climate modelling (CLM) and research. The weather mode was originally developed in 1999 by the German Weather Service and is now maintained and further developed by the consortium of weather services COSMO. The CLimate Mode (CLM) is applied and further developed since 2005 by the Climate Limited-area Modelling (CLM) Community and the environmental mode ART, originally  developed by KIT Karlsruhe, is maintained and further developed since 2009 by the ART scientific users.

An overview of the status of the model system and of the management of the model development will be given with emphasis on the CLM Community activities.

The quality of the model system will be illustrated in terms of evaluation results and of convergence of model uncertainties.
