moisture must be initialized properly if boundary layer structure is to be
correctly simulated. I present results of 1-2 month self-spinup
with WRF for the BLLAST campaign (France, 2011). The spinup
improves the spatial resolution and magnitude of soil moisture in this area of
complex terrain. Boundary layer temperature and moisture profiles correspond
much better to measurements after spinup. Two LSMs
(Noah and PX) behave differently during spinup, but
both benefit. Self-spinup is an alternative to a LDAS
when highly-resolved forcing datasets are not
available.
