P35 Assessment of WRF by meteorological regime

This study will evaluate precipitation in a multi-year database of Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) simulations run in support of the NOAA Hazardous Weather Testbed. Analysis will be done over the Southern and Northern Plains using Self-Organizing Maps (SOMs), a competitive neural network that objectively classifies atmospheric patterns. Evaluating model skill by synoptic pattern can shed light on the physical reasons for biases and aid forecasters in understanding when biases occur.
