Over the past year, while there have only been bug-fix releases for MPAS, we have been very active in development of its Earth System Model (ESM) capabilities for use in CESM within the System for Integrated Modeling of the Atmosphere (SIMA) project and the EarthWorks project. In this presentation we will outline the progress we have made in bringing convection-permitting capabilties to CESM and present preliminary results from this system. We will also provide an update of GPU capabilities for MPAS, both the stand-alone MPAS-Atmosphere and its implementation in CESM, and discuss how we expect to further develop those capabilities.
