WRF Model Version 2: UPDATES

WRF Model Update 2.1.1

WRF model tar file has been updated to Version 2.1.1 on November 8, 2005. In this new tar file, the following bug fixes and updates are provided.

The SI and V2.1 real/ideal output are OK to use for the new wrf.exe.

Also see 'Known Problems' in this release.

Physics:

Surface layer physics:

- Bug fix: surface roughness length (znt) and frictional velocity (ust) are not cycled to the next time step over water. This leaves znt to have only a small default value of 1.0e-4 m. The change will have significant impact on tropical storm simulations - it will reduce wind speed, and decrease sea-level pressure.
- Constant change: Values used for the Charnock constants are changed to more standard ones: czo = 0.0185 and ozo = 1.59e-5. Again, this only affect results over water area.
- Bug fixes for MYJ surface scheme.

Land-Surface models:

- In Noah LSM, the use of surface skin temperature in the surface energy budget equation is replaced by the 2-m temperature, consistant with Penman-Monteith potential evaporation calculation which was linearized by using the skin temperature. This has a general effect of increasing the amplitude of the diurnal cycle (~ 0.5 to 2 K).

PBL:

- Changes for MYJ PBL: modifying computations for PBL height, and add cloud water to the buoyancy term calculation in MIXLEN.

Microphysics

- Bug fixes for Thompson scheme: Correction for ice crystal diffusional rate, and error with collision kernals for rain collecting snow and snow collecting rain.
- Efficiency improvement for WSM6.

Cumulus schemes:

- Bug fix for Betts-Miller-Janjic scheme.

Atmospheric radiation:

- GFDL radiation: clean-up and refinement.
- GSFC radiation: bug fix.

Diffusion/Filter Options:

- Fix for diff_opt = 1 with periodic boundary conditions.

Nesting/Restart:

- Nesting boundary problem fixed. The interface has been extended to 1 specified row/column (as before) and 4 rows/columns for relaxation zone, similar to that for the coarse domain boundary. Terrain, base state mu and geopotential in the boundary zone have the values from the coarse domain, and are blended with the nest data from row/column 6 to 10.
- Bug fixes for interpolation routine for nesting.
- Bug fix for itimestep update in moving nest, which may cause missing physics calls (such as atmospheric radiation because of its dependency on itimestep).
- Missing nest output time problem fixed - this usually happens at the end of a run.
- V2.1 had introduced some problem for restart, and it has been fixed in this release.
- ndown segmention fault fixed.
- Center latitude and longitude calculation corrected for one-way nesting via ndown.

Software:

- Restart with double-precision option is fixed in RSL and RSL_LITE.
- A problem associated with two or more nests when using RSL_LITE is fixed.
- Output problem with using RSL_LITE and nest with smooth_option = 1 is fixed.
- RCONFIG registry variables are no longer passed in through dummy arguments; they are retrieved from GRID% or CONFIG_FLAGS%.
- Remove some redundance in time-keeping routines.
- Add periodic-in-X boundary condition support in RSL_LITE.
- GriB 1 output header fixed.
