 Frequently Asked Questions

LITTLE_R

  1. I have ON29 format data. How do I convert it to LITTLE_R format data?

Download the latest version of FETCH (after Jan 21, 2004). Inside this tar file, there is a new script "adp_to_little-r.csh" that you can use to convert ON29 format to LITTLE_R input format.

  2. I don't have an NCAR account, can I get ON29 data somewhere?

The last year's data is available from the dss web page:
    Surface and Ship data (ds464.0)
    Upper Air data (ds353.4)

  3. How does LITTLE_R differ from RAWINS and which should I use?

    • RAWINS and LITTLE_R have the same function. RAWINS is older F77 code, while LITTLE_R is newer F90 code.

    • LITTLE_R is more user friendly than RAWINS

    • LITTLE_R read observations in ASCII format, while RAWINS can only read Office Note 29 (ON29) format data.

    • If you don't have a specific reason for running RAWINS, it is best to move to the LITTLE_R package
