MM5 Version 2 Release 2-8 (March 22 1998)

Dear MM5 (V2) users,

This email is regarding the MM5 V2 model's newest release: release-2-8.

There is no bug fix in this release. The release is dedicated to integrating the MPP-related changes into the standard MM5 source code, with a few other modifications. All the changes should not affect the model results, neither should they affect the way you are running the model if you are not running on an MPP machine.

Starting from release-2-8, the same source-code may be run on shared-memory machines using in-code parallel directives (such as Cray J90's, SGI Origin 200/2000, HP-SPP machines), and distributed-memory machines (such as IBM SP2, Cray T3E, etc.).
If you are interested in using MPP MM5, please read the README.MPP file inside the MM5 tar file and visit our Web page:

     http://www2.mmm.ucar.edu/mm5/mm5v2.html

The detailed changes are described in the CHANGES file in the top directory of the new tar file. The new tar file can be obtained from several locations, including NCAR's MSS and anonymous ftp.

The CHANGES file separates changes into MPP changes, and non-MPP changes. In addition to this description, the actual changes are provided in a diff file: diff.20MAR98, in directory ReleaseNotes/.
A user should have enough information from these two files to make corresponding changes to your own files.

If you don't want to get a new tar file, files CHANGES, and diff.20MAR98 can be found from anonymous ftp under /mesouser/MM5V2/MM5, and on paiute/ouray under ~mesouser/MM5V2/MM5 They are also accessible from the Web site:

     http://www2.mmm.ucar.edu/mm5/mm5v2-changes-r2-8.html

*** Note: IF YOU HAVE NOT MADE ANY CHANGES TO YOUR TAR FILE (including file structure and source code), YOU SHOULD GET A NEW TAR FILE.

If you use NCAR's Cray, the default tar file you get from MSS will be changed to release-2-8 as of this evening, March 22 1998.
If you would like to use any previous releases, you can change the MSS read statement from

     msread mm5v2.tar /MESOUSER/MM5V2/MM5/MM5V2.TAR
to
     msread mm5v2.tar /MESOUSER/MM5V2/MM5/MM5V2.TAR.release-2-7-2

and so on.

CVS versions of previous MM5 V2 releases (release 2-0 through 2-7) are currently available from NCAR/SCD's meeker (meeker.ucar.edu).
The new release-2-8 will be available in the next few days.
Information on how to make use it can be obtained from the Web page:

     http://www2.mmm.ucar.edu/mm5/cvs.html

This provides users with a way to automatically update your code with our release if users choose to use CVS.

A note for current MPP MM5 users: I have taken the liberty to subscribe you to the mm5 users email list. This will enable you to receive announcements of future releases and other MM5 related emails from mesouser. If you don't want to on this email list,
let me know and I will remove you from the list.
