MM5 Modeling System Overview

Minimum Requirement for Running the Modeling System Software

  • Unix workstation with 128 Mb memory and 1-2 Gb disk. Note though the hardware requirement increases with increase of mesh sizes and grid resolution.

  • PC running Linux with Portland Group Fortran and c compiler.

The primary reasons we choose this compiler are 1) it supports Cray pointers which are used in MM5 model, and a few other programs; and 2) it has Fortran 90 compiler.

  • NCAR Graphics. MM5 modeling system does not require NCAR Graphics to run. One may use NCAR Graphics in programs Terrain, Rawins and Graph to generate graphic output.

The part of NCAR Graphics required by MM5 modeling system programs has become free to download. For information, please see NCAR Graphics page for details.

  • Able to acquire gridded meteorological dataset, and observations.
