NCEP Eta Data (archived at about 40 km resolution)
General information about this
dataset
- The NCEP Eta is a regional analysis and forecast for North
America based on the Eta model.
- This data is available at NCAR since May, 1995
- For further information about the Eta archives at NCAR, see
dss.ucar.edu/pub/gcip
and http://dss.ucar.edu/datasets/ds609.2.
- Peculiarities/Caveats:
- Sea-surface temperature is not archived. Skin temperature
may be used with some caution. Be aware that ground temperatures
and sea-surface temperatures at coastlines may be unrealistic.
- The archived specific humidity is converted to relative humidity
by pregrid.
- Information about NCEP model products, including where to find
the real-time products, may be found at
http://www.emc.ncep.noaa.gov/index.html, in pages such as
and
- This dataset may be used to generate data to use
with the Noah LSM
How to use this dataset with pregrid
Is this data available to ALL users
- NO, this dataset is not generally available to all users.
- A sample dataset (January 01, 1998) is available to all users
from this site:
How to download data automatically
- This option is only available to users with NCAR accounts
- To obtain the data:
- use the script in REGRID/pregrid/grib_misc/get_awip.csh
- OR use the script available from ~mesouser/MM5V3/Util/get_awip.csh
- When you run this scripts make sure that you work in a temporary
directory (such as /tmp/$USER, or /ptmp/$USER on IBM).
- If your job is successful, you should see the following
2 directories YYYYMM_3Danal (containing the
3D analysis files - one file for each time period) and YYYYMM_SFanal
(containing the 2D surface files - one file for each time
period)
- Once you have downloaded the files from the MSS, you need to
ftp the files to your local computer. All files must be transferred
with the ftp "binary" mode.
How to download data manually
- This option is only available to users with NCAR accounts
- Go to ftp://ncardata.ucar.edu/datasets/ds609.2/inventories/eta.inv,
and find out which G40xxx file contains the time period of your
interest.
- Note that you should get both 3Danal and SFanal
files.
- On NCAR's IBM or other machines, obtain the files by using
this command:
- msread -f BI G40xxx /DSS/G40xxx
- These files are very large in size and each contains a
full month of data, so you may want to extract the files for
your time periods first before you rcp or ftp back to your
local computer.
- To find out what are in these files, go to:
- NOTE:
- The analysis data are only available every 12 hours (*tm00
files). For the 6 or 3 hour files you need to also get the
*tm06 or *tm09/*tm03 files.
- You should obtain *.tm?? files from both 3D and SFC data

- Type the following to extract files from G40001, for example:
- tar -xvf G40001 9706_3Danal/97062400.AWIP3D00.tm00
\
9706_3Danal/97062412.AWIP3D00.tm00 \

- Do the same for the surface data file
- Once you have downloaded the files from the MSS, you need to
ftp the files to your local computer. All files must be transferred
with the ftp "binary" mode.
