Dear MM5 users,

This email announces the release 3-6 of MM5 model Version 3.

MM5 and MPP source code tar files are updated on anonymous ftp site, NCAR's MSS, and IBM-accessible disk since December 27, 2002.
For information on where to obtain the 3-6 source code, please see

http://www2.mmm.ucar.edu/mm5/mm5v3.html

The highlights of the 3-6 release include:

  1. The OSULSM (ISOIL=2) option has been replaced with the new unified (Noah) LSM. This unifies code between AFWA AGRMET, NCEP Eta/LDAS, NCAR MM5, and future WRF. The new LSM has additional physics for frozen soil, and includes a number of
    improvements over the OSULSM.

  2. The polar physics modifications from Ohio State University is in this release. These will allow for effects of sea-ice fraction, fluxes within sea-ice and snow/ice in slab, surface fluxes over ice in the Eta PBL, Meyers ice nuclei conc in the simple and Reisner1 microphysics schemes, and modified permanent ice properties in LANDUSE.TBL. It is activated by IPOLAR=1 in the configure.user file.
This option only works with ISOIL=1 at this time.

  3. The Reisner II scheme has had substantail changes. These include the bug fixes to number concentration unit and the use of RON2. Snow to graupel conversion has also been changed. For more details please see the documentation at the beginning of exmoisg.F file.

  4. If using the GS PBL scheme, the TKEA values are now been feedback from the nest.

  5. MPP tar file has been updated with the new changes in V3.6 MM5.

Note that both the Noah LSM and the polar physics modifications are beta releases.

The detailed changes are described in the CHANGES file in the top directory. The new tar file can be obtained from several locations, including NCAR's MSS and anonymous ftp. The detailed changes are provided in Diff/diff.19DEC02 inside the tar file.
